John Mueller of Google Says that spammy links generated for your site would not cause the soft 404 errors that displays in search console. This occured when someone questioned from John regarding the soft 404 Error.

Recommendation:

Shopify: Users Now Edit Their Robots.txt File

The question is:

This truly has me stumped  increasing ~2-3k URLs a day. Can see Google Bot in access logs, pages are unique with data + images, doesn’t relate to new spam algo change, server performance all good .@JohnMu could spam domains copying our content cause soft 404s? Disavow time?

On This John Reverted:

No, spammy links don’t cause soft-404s.
