Flipkart is now allowing buyers to avail EMIs on their debit card purchases during its Big Billion Days (BBD) sale event as a strategy to clinch more revenues during their event. It was previously discussing over loans that it would provide from its platform during the event.

The rules adopted and process under execution

EMIs till now have been limited to credit cards only, as used by almost all ecommerce sites. The company has created a ‘white list’ of users who will be allowed to use this service.

Flipkart is already working with SBI and Axis Bank, and are in a test phase to check for large valued appliances which they are going to extend for mid-to-high value products.

Flipkart’s statement

Sandeep Karwa, head of large appliances said”Based on past purchases and other data points, we have a set of customers who we can offer EMIs to through their debit cards. We saw that this population of buyers was not being able to shop for high-value products as they did not have credit cards. With this plan about to be introduced, they can opt for higher priced items, which shall push our overall sales volumes up”.

The reason behind

The number of debit cards users have outnumbered the credit cards in India and such a scheme would prove fruitful for the online retailers.
