Statement By Facebook

To make payments on Messenger even easier, we’ve begun testing the ability for people to use QR codes and payment links when they want to send or request money.

This test by Facebook is limited to US users as of now. Facebook has been working on QR codes for years as the company rolled out scannable messenger codes back in 2016 which were made to allow instant connection to friends in the app.

Conclusion

All these experiments by Facebook have been made to make QR codes a more connective option building the link between offline and online activity. Facebook can now make a huge push which could offer new tools for brands to better track and encourage in-app offers.
