With the political ad scandal on Facebook during elections, Twitter has now taken up a different route where there would be more transparency in the political ads that will be displayed on the platform. Twitter bots have been particularly involved in this political bout.

What are they doing about this?

Twitter is trying very hard to curb the ad issues by introducing an Advertising Transparency Center that will provide complete visibility in advertising.

What will this Transparency Center do?

  • It will provide complete insight into the ads that are running on Twitter along with Promoted Only Ads
  • The time taken by the ads to run
  • Ad creative that are associated with ad campaigns
  • Ads targeted to user and personalized info

More about the ads

Twitter is also introducing Electioneering ads and said “Electioneering ads are those that refer to a clearly identified candidate (or party associated with that candidate) for any elected office.* To make it clear when you are seeing or engaging with an electioneering ad, we will now require that electioneering advertisers identify their campaigns as such. We will also change the look and feel of these ads and include a visual political ad indicator.”

What is Twitter doing for ‘issue-based’ ads?

Twitter stated that “We’re committed to stricter policies and transparency around issue-based ads. There is currently no clear industry definition for issue-based ads but we will work with our peer companies, other industry leaders, policy makers, and ad partners to clearly define them quickly and integrate them into the new approach mentioned above.”
