Pinterest launches a new “Shop” tab within its Lens visual search results to add more to its goal of becoming a full eCommerce platform. This addition will make it easier for users to search for buyable items on the basis of an image.

Explanation By Pinterest:

“Just click the camera in the search bar, snap or upload a photo, and see a “Shop” tab with a feed of shoppable Pins based on the in-stock products we’ve identified in that image. Every Product Pin links directly to the checkout page on the retailer’s site.”

Users can either take a new picture or upload an older image from your camera gallery. Pinterest will then showcase related products that you can purchase then and there. This feature is enabled via the expansion of Shoppable Pins which Pinterest has been working on with new systems like improved Shopify integration option that makes it easier for Shopify merchants to upload their products catalog on the platform.

In a way, Pinterest has taken the place of the shopping mall, offering ways to view and browse products virtually like Amazon but according to your specific interests. Lens searches play a role in this process. Pinterest reveals that it has seen a 3x increment in visual searches with users using the tool to find relevant products and matching items according to their needs.

Considerably, adding a specific shop tab in the lens search doesn’t make a big difference, as users can find shoppable pins within your lens results already. But again this adds to Pinterest’s focus on shopping specifically which is exactly where Pinterest seeks to work.
