After their latest update in Ad transparency, Twitter next move ended its 140 character tweet and pumped up to 280 characters. It is believed to work like a microblogging service but after its successful testing, it released the 280 character limit.

What Twitter has to say about the new development?

The Product Manager, Aliza Rosen said whatever the character limit, “the speed and brevity that makes Twitter, Twitter”. She also added many people “tweeted the full 280 limit because it was new and novel”.

The Testing phase

During the testing, it was noted that only a few tweets went beyond 140 and only 2% went beyond 190 characters. This shows that users are somehow clinging to short characters or couldn’t write longer tweets.

Boosting engagement

With the expansion of characters, there has been much higher engagement in test users that will help in increasing the number of followers that will be a boon to advertisers.

The main reason for change

Twitter felt that advertisers will be much benefited from this and said: “a higher character limit made them feel more satisfied with how they expressed themselves on Twitter, their ability to find good content, and Twitter overall”. Even their new team #Fuel was launched to help advertisers in creating some brand strategy for their brand awareness.

A Notice by Twitter

Users who are using Twitter in Chinese, the Japanese or Korean language will be using 140 characters as they commented that “because cramming is not an issue in these languages” and “have always been able to say more with their tweets because of the density of their writing systems.”
